Underground Art + Design is a not for profit arts organisation set up "to promote the work of artists and makers to a wider audience and offer development opportunities through workshops, exhibitions, residencies and commissions. At the same time helping to develop a new audience for the arts (specialising in three dimensional outdoor work) and encourage participation from people who may otherwise not have had that opportunity".
We are once again looking for Sculptors and Designers of outdoor work to exhibit in the stunning 180 acre gardens in Romsey, Hampshire.
This year the exhibition will not only have a commercial element, selling and commissioning work; we are also planning the exhibition will have a stronger educational element that will mean artists can respond directly to the collection. As a new feature in 2007 the gardens are planning to build a maze and within this they would like the audience to come across work that will stimulate the younger audience, either through play, education or sensory.
We are searching from culturally diverse artists to place work in gardens either from a body of work already created or site specific work created in response to the gardens world renowned collection. Plants originate from most parts of the globe with an emphasis on Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Mexico. It would be great to see artists producing work that aided people with disabilities to gain more from their experience of the gardens, providing pieces that use other senses along with the visual. For further info about the gardens and Art in the Garden 06 go to www.hilliergardens.org.uk
We have once again secured funding from Southampton Saab, which will enable us to hold a residency within the exhibition. This is normally held in August, but we are very open to suggestions and timing of the project. 2006 gave us a very successful, week long, residency from the nationally known willow artist Laura Ellen Bacon.
There will also be opportunities to sell smaller scale work at both the
gardens and other venues within the Hampshire area. For example, this year's
first confirmed event is at The Project Workshops, Andover, open weekend
from 11th - 13th May 2008. This event is growing in popularity and offers
a great chance for Art in the Garden participants to preview their exhibits
to an arts focused audience prior to installation in the main exhibition
the following week. To find out more about the venue and the event go to
www.project-workshop.co.uk.
